The Girne American University (GAU) was founded in 1985 as the first private higher education institution in Northern Cyprus and recently celebrated its 30th anniversary. The goal of the university since its foundation is to provide a comprehensive Higher Education of American standards for students from different nationalities.

General Information. Location

The university was established by American Educational Consortium – international organization formed to cooperate with educational institutions based on American educational system.

The university is constantly developing and improving and therefore meets the high educational standards determined by the American education system.

The programs of the university are designed to give the students required theoretical and practical knowledge through “learning by doing” method of teaching.

The campuses of the university located in different countries – USA, England, Singapore, Turkey. The main campus is based in Kyrenia, one of the most beautiful places of Cyprus.

The university offers various undergraduate and graduate (Master, PhD) programs, summer language school.

GAU closely cooperates with many international universities, and offers various exchange programs in other countries.

International relations and recognition

The Girne American University is indeed an international university, which today have students from more than 70 countries. GAU is accredited by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE), USA and European Council for Business Education (ECBE).

GAU is also recognized by the British National Recognition Information Centre (UK NARIC) which is of the highest importance for students who intend to continue their higher education in the United Kingdom and build their future professional career there. Programs of Tourism and Hospitality Department are accredited by TedQual, established under the aegis of the World Tourism Organization (WTO).

Engineering programs are accredited by one of the best accreditation and audit establishments for science and technology of the European Union – ASIIN (Accreditation Agency for Degree Programs in Engineering, Informatics, the Natural Sciences and Mathematics).

Education at the university at the Bachelor’s degree program is designed for 4 years. The program when students study in Cyprus’s campus and then go for one-two semesters to England or Singapore is also very popular among the GAU students. Master’s programs usually take 1,5-2  years.

One week programs consists of 21 academic hours plus practical classes (usually they make up 40% of overall educational program). The educational process includes consultation, laboratory classes, lectures, seminars, practice. Each semester finishes with exams.
An academic year at the university is divided into two semesters, the classes program is designed on modular scheme based on the offset of credit hours. In order to meet the degree requirements one needs to gain 120 credits plus 6-9 for foreign languages.

University infrastructure and material base

The University has an excellent material and technical base, including private broadcasting station and satellite communications, Internet access, computer halls, laboratories, educational and research centers, libraries equipped on the advanced technologies.

GAU offers for its students three dormitories: two female and one male. The dormitories are designed and equipped with European standards and located close to the university. Modern university buses run from early morning until 21.30 from every dormitory, university and city center and back.

Everything in the university campus is made for the students to feel cozy and comfortable. This includes modern buildings with light spacious classrooms, wonderful gardens with a pool and fountain, and, of course, comfortable rooms to live in. At present there are more than 20 various clubs on interests: tennis, basketball, volleyball, horse riding, body building, wind surfing, ballet dancing etc.

Shops and numerous cafes are available for the students.

Admission Requirements

For admission to GAU you need to take the TOEFL language test with a result of 550 points at least. Those who have not received the required number of points are invited to the Foundation English School. You can also pass an internal English test of the university.

To prepare for the admission to the university, you can take advantage of GAU Multicultural Summer School. Their intensive English courses are very popular among the prospective students.


The university offers a range of scholarships for international students.

Approximately 10% of the students are awarded with 50-100% scholarship on tuition fee. Students can apply for such scholarship after completion of 10 courses (with academic performance of 3 credits at least in each course) and provided that an applicant meets the minimum CGPA performance requirements. This academic scholarship are awarded on competitive basis and therefore is not guaranteed. After completion of the Foundation English School additional scholarships may be granted to the best students. Students who regularly represent the university in sports competition are also entitled to apply for scholarships.
