Eastern Mediterranean University was founded in Famagusta at 1979 as Institute of High Technologies. The university is a public educational institution and currently occupies a territory of more than 615 000 sq.m.

General Information. Location

The university was the first in Northern Cyprus to train specialists at the faculties of civil engineering, electrical and mechanical engineering.

EMU has a great ranking. It is among the 5% of the world’s best universities and holds the 2nd ranking place among the Mediterranean universities. The faculty of tourism and hospitality is in the top three among similar faculties of European universities.

The university educates in accordance with international standards and is a full member of International Association of Universities (IAU) under the aegis of UNESCO, European University Association (EUA), Commonwealth of Mediterranean Universities  (CMU) and other reputable international organizations. Particular importance in the university is given to the international recognition, and numerous accreditations of various well-known international organizations confirm this. Almost all the faculties of the university have accreditations granted by European community.

All the university programs are designed and taught in high quality English. The university is training the students for their further international careers by means of developing and enhancing their creative, competitive and entrepreneur skills. All the students have opportunities to participate in various students exchange programs. As a result of numerous international accreditations and high educational standards all the Eastern Mediterranean University diplomas are recognized all over the world.

Members of 30 research centers of the university including professors and students, publish approximately 300 various articles per year in international scientific journals and periodicals. Most of the academic professorial staff are the doctors of science, who have received their degrees from reputable universities of Europe and the United States.

All students have the opportunity to study modern foreign languages - German, French, Russian, Spanish, Italian, Greek and others.

Education

Applications for admission are accepted twice a year (fall and spring semester).

The language of teaching is English, besides Faculty of Education, which trains teachers for Turkish schools, and the Faculty of Law. All the foreign applicants have to pass only one exam in English or provide a certificate proving their required level of proficiency in English.

Students who dont have the required level of English will be offered to study at the English Foundation School of the university.  The English Foundation School helps to learn and improve English as well as to adapt to the students. The program of education is designed for two semesters, during which every student must pass 4 exams in levels of language proficiency. There is also a possibility of early completion of the Foundation School after 3, 6 and 9 months, which allows to reduce respectively the tuition fee. After successful completion of the Foundation School the certificates of the University of Cambridge (UK) will be issued.

  • The university today:
  • Annual education of 15,000 to 20,000 students on average from 68 countries of the world;
  • 1500 of lecturers, professors and administrative stuff;
  • 50 specializations (Bachelor programs) — 4 years educations, 8 vocational schools — 2 years education, 26 Master degree programs and 14 Doctorate (PhD) programs.

Depending on the selected department and specialization offers various forms of payment.

Infrastructure

The University has developed sports and social infrastructure, including a modern stadium with a capacity of 5,000 seats, athletics tracks, indoor sports complex with stands for 3,500 seats, a bank branch and satellite communications center with a powerful local network and high-speed internet. At the university you can also find a post office, bookstore, laundry, fully equipped health center with highly qualified doctors and a private ambulance, a psychologist's office, etc.

Unlimited housing possibilities ensure accommodation for 6000 students along with houses and flats rented by the university for students who want to live in the city. Moreover, there are several private student residential complexes in campus and out of it.
The university is famous for its library, one of the largest on the island, with a collection of 140,000 books, more than 800 periodicals and journals, and rich electronic resources. The main library lecture hall is used for conferences, events and music concerts. There are also halls with a rich collection of classical music, European and American halls with various information on history and people from Europe and America, EU and its structure.

The University has a college and kindergarten.

The university, its staff and students are proud of the university private sandy beach, which is no doubt one of the best in the city.
Quality education and everyday life of students is enriched by numerous social and cultural activities, and  more than 50 student clubs and international student associations, operating within the Student International Center.
