Near East University (NEU)

Near East University (NEU) was established in Nicosia at 1988 and is now is the largest university of Northern Cyprus. The university has a status of a private educational institution. NEU’s students receive quality international education in English. The students enjoy the stable transport communication over the city.

General Information

The university has currently more than 25 000 students from 65 countries and four continents. Its international high qualified professor and teaching staff is represented by more than 25 countries.

The University is a member of the European University Association (EUA), International Association of Universities (IAU) under the aegis of UNESCO, as well as the Federation of Universities of the Islamic World (FUIW). NEU also has an international membership and accreditation in IGIP (International Society for Engineering Pedagogy) and JCI (International Organization for Leadership Development and Entrepreneurship).

Near East University organizes and holds numerous scientific conferences and symposiums at a local and international level, which are attended by leading experts and scientists with a worldwide reputation from various countries.

Research work

The scientists and students of the university work on the research of problems and the prevention of cancer and in  2014 they joined the study of finding the ways to cure the Ebola virus. The university has its own supercomputer, which in terms of calculation speed and memory capacity is estimated to be the most powerful in the region and 13th in the world. NEU-IBM Research Center successfully works in the areas of medical sciences, chemistry, physics, astronomy, architecture and mathematics.

Near East University’s research team created the first in Northern Cyprus domestic automobile PA 25, running just on solar energy. The automobile was presented in a global event on the problems of using solar energy. The university has currently been developing a more advanced model of this automobile - РА 26, with the aim of launching it into series production as a family automobile.

The university keeps one of the best in the world herbarium, carrying out researches into history, politics and fabric development. The university is also involved in close cooperation with the Middle East University in the studies of the sea around Cyprus, water quality, marine biodiversity, genetic of sea organisms and the factors that threaten them.

Academic calendar

The academic year calendar consists of two semesters: fall and spring.

Admission to university is held in September and in February.

Fall admission starts on September 1 and finishes on October 1. Classes lasts until January 15. Winter vacation: January 20 till February 5.

Spring admission starts on February 5 and finishes on March 1. Classes last until June 25. Foundation School tuition fee amounts to 1,100 Euro per year.

Admission to Foundation School starts on July 6.

Infrastructure

The university campus include numerous facilities, classrooms, laboratories, college, two secondary schools, primary school and nursery school.

There are more than 40 operating laboratories in NEU fitted with cutting-edge research  equipment and machinery.

The university’s Cultural Center and Congress Center help numerous scientific conferences, concerts, congresses, cultural events, dancing shows, including annual Cyprus International Theatre Festival. The Centers have also have four small event halls.

Three unique museums were founded at NEU: Communication Museum, Art Museum and Classic Automobile Museum.

On the basis of the Faculty of Medicine, which had been opened in 2008, the university founded a modern hospital. AT present the hospital  which is the biggest private hospital in Northern Cyprus, which has its own research centers, including a Research Center of Medical Radiology. The Faculty of Medicine works on health strengthening in the country and provides preventive health checkups of students and pupils.

The pride of the university is its library which occupies an area of more than 15,000 sq.m. The library has a strong scientific and methodological potential of 1 million printed materials and more than 150 million electronic resources. The library has four constantly operating reading rooms with a total capacity of 1,000 people. Up to 7,000 students use the library every day.

Leisure and student life

The social life of the students of the university includes various clubs of interests, including sports, engineering, economics, teaching, architecture, law, medicine and aeronautics.

Most of the clubs cover such sports as basketball, football, tennis, volleyball, handball, horse riding, hiking, wrestling, athletics, cycling, swimming and chess. NEU has also a regular team of water ballet.

The university owns the only indoor Olympic swimming pool with area of 2,700 sq.m in Northern Cyprus. The members of NEU swimming team win medals of international competitions.

Near East University holds annual Spring Festival, inviting famous Cypriot, Turkish and international singers, bands, as well as dance festivals, sport events and competitions. In 2014 the university set up a park named Near East which held concerts of Deep Purple, the Moscow State Ballet and many others.

The university also takes part in the annual festival of rock music and organizes student cultural carnival in Nicosia, in which streets are filled with locals and guests of the city.

Those interested can always take part in traditional and September trips around Northern Cyprus.

Entry requirements for applicants

For admission to Near East University the following documents are required:

  • 12 photos with 3x4 size;
  • School or lyceum certificate (results of central examination in your country are not relevant);
  • Passport and a copy of passport;
  • List of all passed disciplines and grades.

Knowledge of English language is welcomed. Each applicant to the university is tested to determine the level of English language proficiency.
